Write my own Thesaurus of Flavors.
This was on my writing to-do list, and while I like the idea of it, I have a hard time engaging it when I sit down to do it. I remember flavors, but I don’t have a computer bank full of ready-to-access flavors. They sort of drift and in out of my mind’s eye, depending on how hungry I am, or what I recently ate, or what smells are wafting around. There are the few times when I find a taste in my mouth and I have a hard time placing it. Once I walked into a lecture hall at college and tasted beer in my mouth. I had not been drinking. Another time I had a sharp ginger taste on my tongue, even though I’d only eaten porridge that morning.
A Thesaurus of Flavors, though, is still intriguing. The thesaurus part. We all know what lime tastes like, but how else would you describe it? And what foods would you use? Here’s a quick example:
Lime - Synonyms: acidic, yellow, real mexican tacos, citrus, brightness, juicy, liquid electricity, gin & tonic, green kool-aid. Antonyms: any kind of bean, any kind of legume, dry toast, boiled potatoes.
I mean, what’s the opposite of fruit?
A Thesaurus of Flavors would take a long time to write, punctuated by a lot of tasting.
