N: I just finished reading “Tropical Truth” by Caetano Veloso, translated by Isabel de Sena. It included such phrases as “Catholic tropical monster”, “liberate creative energies”, and “voluptuous oddity.” That last one was about a gramophone. It must be equally frustrating and thrilling to try and replicate someone’s writing idiosyncrasies into another language. That’s where all the real language discovery is happening. That’s the wild frontier of connotations, folks.
